Abstract
A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is one of the most serious issues in academic institutions especially in Iraq where universities use digital services. The current research proposes an ICA–PCA hybrid approach that helps to increase cybersecurity levels by addressing DDoS attacks. This study uses a process involving the collection of traffic in the network, PCA method for data reduction, ICA for feature extraction, classification with Random Forest algorithm, and a Cybersecurity Performance Index (CPI) as a measure of cybersecurity maturity. The proposed approach achieved high classification efficiency and accuracy with rates of 99.3% and 99.1% respectively while the number of false alarms is minimal. The CPI index proved to be an effective measure of cybersecurity maturity level.
